Apurimac Endemics 2 Days

One and Two Day Birding trips from Cusco Short trips that are convenient if visiting Cusco, or before or after another trip to the old Inca Capital.

Day 1: We pick you up at your hotel in Cusco and drive for through the Andes towards the town of Abancay. We’ll be stopping along the way with a picnic lunch and some birding. Taking a side road we’ll end up at high altitude on the flanks of the spectacular Salkantay Massif where the endemic Vilcabamba Tapaculo is to be found. Many Sierra Finches and other typical high Andean Birds will be aroundas we bird under the towering glaciers. We’ll continue to and beyond Abancay to a locality in the dry Apurimac Canyon. As the light fades we’ll take a look at Pale-tailed Canastero and maybe White-eared Puffbird. Staying after dark (it’s the tropics so it’s dark at 6:00 pm) we’ll search for the Apurimac subspecies of Koepcke’s Screech Owl. Here too is the slow voiced race of Peruvian Pygmy Owl. Night Hotel de Turistas in Abancay. L:D

Day 2: Leisurely start before heading off to our next locality near the high pass above Abancay where we recently discovered the endemic Apurimac Spinetail, which is common here. We can also get excellent scope views of the recently excavated major Inca ruins of Choquequirao and megalithic terraces with unusual Llama designs across the Apurimac Canyon. Here also is the endemic Apurimac Brush Finch, the yet to be described “Ampay Tapaculo”, Streak-backed and Rusty-fronted Canastero. We’ll bird the remnant cloud forest patches. After lunch we’ll head for Cusco and stop at the important Inca ruins of Tarawasi and the famous Sahuite stone. We drop you off at your hotel in Cusco. B:L:
